Meet the Reds family!
Faye Swift, Owner
Faye is what we like to call “The Oracle”. The original family restauranteur, Faye opened Sluggers over 20 years ago and has passed her knowledge and skills down to her two children, Matt and Christina. Along with a successful real estate career, Faye is a co-owner of Blackstone in Iowa City and has been recognized in the Corridor Business Journal’s Entrepreneur: 101 Magazine for her local success. Her philosophy has always been to treat customers and employees like family, and this can be seen firsthand through all of the returning regular customers and long-term staff members her restaurants have maintained over the years.
Matthew Swift, Owner/Operator
Matt is a native of the Iowa City/Coralville area, and his restaurant savvy skills and lifelong local presence have been critical to Reds’ success. The son of owners Faye & John Swift, Matt also co-owns Blackstone in Iowa City, and has established himself as a prominent young business owner in the area. Matt’s passion is driven by hospitality and the desire to give people a genuinely unique experience surrounded by great service, great food, and great beer.
Whitney Elwood, General Manager
Whitney proudly hails from Decorah, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009 and had no idea what she wanted to do with her life, until she stumbled upon Reds Alehouse; where she quickly developed a passion for the restaurant business. Before you know it, it was home. She worked her way up from server, to bartender, to shift manager, to general manager in 2 years. Along the way her interest in craft beer, mixology and great food grew…and is now completely out of control! Nothing makes Whit happier than getting behind that crazy Reds bar and experimenting with different cocktails…if you’re up for a surprise just ask her to mix one up for ya!
Brandon Ryan, Service Manager
Brandon is also a native Iowa Citian, so his knowledge and appreciation for what the corridor area has to offer is unparalleled. He is extremely proud and feels fortunate to be a part of Reds Alehouse. As Whitney did, Brandon worked his way up from server to service manager in 2 years. Brandon has spent years in restaurants, starting out at the age of 4 washing dishes in his father’s restaurant along the Mississippi River in Minnesota. Since then, he has learned every position in the restaurant business. When not spending his days at Reds, Brandon is an avid golfer, water skier, amateur (severe amateur!!) cook, and a proud Chicago Cubs fan. Brandon prides himself on having the most knowledgeable staff around and is always striving to learn more about the craft beer movement and it’s place in today’s competitive restaurant world.
Shane Durian, Head Chef
Shane is a remarkably talented, self-trained chef who has been cooking in the area for the past 7 years. He has put together some phenomenal menus for beer dinners and special events, and he is always striving to take the Reds’ cuisine to the next level. A huge fan of culinary icons like Grant Achatz and Charlie Trotter, Shane enjoys experimenting with new flavors and techniques, and consciously attempts to incorporate craft beer into his menu. Some people come to Reds for the great beer, but we get just as many compliments about the food, so cheers to Shane!
Bill Heinrich, Brewer/Beer Specialist
Bill is from East Central Illinois and is a Cornell alum. His interest in beer began when at the age of 18 he realized that while he could not buy beer, he could certainly brew it. His curiosity led him to Millstream Brewing in Amana where he brewed for two years. Following this, he worked as a Beer Distributor at John’s Grocery, and has most recently finished a one year brewing stint at BJ’s in Reno. According to Bill, “The most important thing that any brewer can do is insure that each glass is as perfect as possible. While perfection may be beyond reach, the pursuit of perfection is not, and that’s the best I can do.” Well said, Bill.
